Kala Namak - fine (India)



Kala Namak or 'Black Salt' is a special type of Indian mineral rock salt. It is dark purple/black in colour (pinkish/brown when ground) and has a very distinctive sulfurous mineral taste. The Black salt is collected from deep mines in black/brown/purple salt blocks and contains several important minerals, including iron and sulphur.

Kala Namak is used sparingly in the preparation of raitas, joghurt dishes, chaats, salads and the summer drink jal jeera.  
Add as a finishing salt to fried noodle and rice dishes.
It crosses cultural boundaries when used on popcorn, naan bread, focaccia and bagels - exquisite.
Kala Namak is very popular with vegans, vegetarians, and Ayurveda devotees, who appreciate its cooling effect and digestive qualities.
It is not recommended as a cooking salt, as the sulphur tends to overpower.
