Salt, minerals and trace elements are an essential part of the daily diet of all animals.The Himalayan salt lick satisfies the animal's craving for salt, whilst providing them with the other essential minerals and trace elements that are required for optimum health. Even small amounts of trace elements can transform a sickly animal into a healthy one.Deficiency in salt and essential elements can lead to loss of appetite and in the case of dairy cattle, poor milk production. These deficiency indicators include licking gates, walls and stones, eating soil or bark. Horses constantly searching the hedgerows in good grass pasture can often be telling the owners that there is a mineral deficiency in their diet. There is, therefore, an important role for mineral and trace element supplementation to help to maximise equine health.There is increasing evidence to show that many minerals and trace elements are needed to improve the horses immune system to enable them to cope with infections. Sodium, chloride, zinc, copper, selenium, and magnesium have already been shown to be helpful in this regard.Because salt is self-limiting, (the horse wont take them if they do not need them) horses already well supplemented will take less of the free choice salt, while other horses on a more basic ration will take more salt and so receive the essential minerals and trace elements for their daily needs, so you cannot overfeed.
